Mum’s eyes are blue. No, they are actually brown. But right now they are blue on the outside, because her boyfriend has beaten her again. Lasse is sitting in his room and listening. Hearing his mother in the kitchen.

Why doesn’t she come in and say something to him. But Mum is so quiet. She says nothing, except the usual stuff like, eat your food now, that sort of thing.

Lasse would like to ask her, but he does not dare. Because then, Mum will become more unhappy.

Should one talk about it, when one is unhappy? Why do adults not talk about it?

The adults’ silence
Why does Mum say nothing to me?
This is what many children ask themselves, when they have been exposed to violence in the family. Mum knows, that her child has seen it all, yet she says nothing.

There can be several reasons for this. Maybe Mum prefers not to make her child unhappy – or perhaps for fear of breaking down and crying.

It is also possible, she believes that everything will go away, if she remains silent. But what one has already seen will not disappear, by silencing it to death.
